One donation quietly erased more than $550 million in medical debt—not for a single person, but for over 261,000 Californians. The massive relief effort came through Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit that purchases unpaid medical bills for pennies on the dollar and forgives them completely.
The donation was made by Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and his wife, model Miranda Kerr, who contributed millions to help wipe out overwhelming healthcare-related debt across the state. The impact was especially significant in places like San Diego County, where $99 million in debt was eliminated for over 40,000 people, and Los Angeles County, where $26.7 million was cleared for more than 17,000 residents.
Many of those affected never had to apply or even request help. Instead, they will simply receive letters in the mail informing them that their medical debt has been erased. For families struggling quietly under financial pressure, the relief arrives unexpectedly—and often life-changing.
The initiative highlights how large-scale generosity can transform lives in a single action. For many recipients, it means reduced stress, greater financial stability, and the chance to finally move forward. Sometimes, the most powerful gift is not additional wealth, but the removal of a burden that should never have existed in the first place.
