Which Way Is the Correct Way to Hang Toilet Paper? (The Answer Might Surprise You)

For years, households have been divided into two camps: Team Over and Team Under. Some people insist the paper should hang over the front, while others prefer it tucked underneath against the wall. It seems like a tiny detail—but it has sparked surprisingly passionate debates! 😂 So, is there actually a “correct” way?

People who prefer under say it looks neater and can make it harder for pets or little children to grab and unravel the entire roll. But supporters of over have some pretty strong arguments too. The loose end is easier to see and grab, sheets are easier to tear, and printed designs are meant to be visible. Some hygiene arguments also favor over, since the paper may have less contact with the wall or holder. 🧻✨

But here’s the really interesting part: history seems to favor Team Over. In 1891, inventor Seth Wheeler patented a perforated toilet paper roll, and the illustrations in the original patent clearly show the paper hanging over the front of the roll. The design also allowed users to pull the paper forward and tear it easily along the perforations. 📜👀

👉 SO, WHAT’S THE ANSWER? There’s no universal rule forcing everyone to hang toilet paper one particular way, so your personal preference still wins. But if someone asks which direction has the strongest historical evidence, OVER gets the victory! 🏆🚽 Next time you walk into a bathroom, take a look at the roll—and then ask your family: Over or Under? You might be surprised how strongly people feel about it! 😂❤️
