6 Different Ways to Use Eggshells in Gardening and Why They Are Beneficial

Instead of throwing eggshells away, consider using them in your garden. Rich in calcium and other minerals, eggshells can help improve soil, support healthy plant growth, and even reduce certain garden pests. They’re an easy, eco-friendly way to recycle kitchen waste while giving your plants a natural boost.

One popular use is crushing dried eggshells and mixing them into the soil or around plants to provide a slow-release source of calcium. You can also use eggshell halves to start seeds before transplanting them into the garden. Some gardeners make a simple liquid fertilizer by soaking or boiling crushed shells in water, while others add them to compost to enrich it with valuable nutrients.

Eggshells can also serve as a natural barrier against slugs and snails, thanks to their rough texture. If you raise chickens, crushed eggshells can be added to their feed occasionally to provide extra calcium for strong eggshell production. To keep a supply on hand, simply let used eggshells dry completely before crushing or storing them in a dry place.

While eggshells can be a helpful addition to your garden, they work best as part of a balanced gardening routine rather than a miracle solution. Combined with healthy soil, proper watering, and regular plant care, they can be a simple and sustainable way to help your garden thrive while reducing household waste.
