What started as a relaxing fishing trip on the Mississippi River quickly turned into an unforgettable wildlife encounter. While kayaking with her daughter during a family vacation, Shala Holm noticed a huge snapping turtle slowly swimming toward their boat. The giant reptile appeared to be after the basket of freshly caught crappies hanging beside the kayak, leaving both mother and daughter stunned by its enormous size.

Holm quickly pulled the fish basket out of the water, and the turtle quietly disappeared beneath the surface. Curious about the incredible sight, the pair returned to the same location the following day. Within minutes, the massive turtle reappeared, giving Holm the perfect chance to capture several close-up photos. Looking one last time at the creature’s powerful claws, thick legs, and prehistoric-looking head, she realized this was unlike anything she had ever seen.

After sharing the photos with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, wildlife experts identified the animal as a common snapping turtle, the largest native turtle species in Minnesota. Based on its size and heavily worn shell, they estimated the turtle was at least 15 years old and possibly as old as 30. When the images were later posted online, they quickly went viral, with thousands of people amazed by the ancient-looking river giant.

Although snapping turtles may look intimidating, experts say they are usually calm in the water and prefer to avoid people. They also play an important role in keeping rivers healthy by feeding on dead fish and other organic matter. For Holm, the incredible encounter only strengthened her love for the Mississippi River, and she’s already hoping to see the giant turtle again next summer.
