What began as one of the happiest days of Fred Marsh and Hailey Lummus’ lives ended in unimaginable tragedy. On the morning of July 18, the 24-year-old Arkansas police officer proposed to his longtime girlfriend before the couple set out on a canoeing trip with friends along the Elk River in Noel, Missouri. Just hours later, their joyful celebration turned into heartbreak when Hailey found herself struggling against the river’s powerful current.

Without hesitation, Marsh jumped into the water to save her, joined by another off-duty police officer. Together, they managed to guide Hailey safely back to shore. But as she reached safety, Marsh was swept away by the fast-moving current. Despite frantic rescue efforts from those nearby, he disappeared beneath the water. His body was recovered the following morning.

Hailey’s mother, Sheryl Padgett, said the couple had shared three wonderful years together and had just become engaged that same day. Although they never had the chance to marry, she said Marsh would always be considered part of their family. The young officer had only recently graduated from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy and had begun serving with the Rogers Police Department earlier this year.

On July 20, law enforcement officers honored Marsh with a solemn motorcade as his body was escorted through Northwest Arkansas. Family members remembered him as a true hero who put someone else’s life before his own. His cousin, Chris Frye, said Marsh never stopped to think about himself in those final moments—he acted on instinct, driven by the courage and selflessness that defined both his life and his service.
