Child star Mara Wilson, 38, left Hollywood after ‘Matilda’ as she was ‘not cute anymore’

In the 1990s, Mara Wilson became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable child stars, winning audiences over with memorable roles in Mrs. Doubtfire, Miracle on 34th Street, and Matilda. While her career seemed destined for long-term success, Wilson says growing older changed everything. As she entered her teenage years, the roles stopped coming, leaving her feeling that Hollywood had lost interest once she was no longer viewed as the adorable child audiences had come to know.

Wilson has spoken openly about the pressures of growing up in the spotlight, explaining that she began to believe her value depended on her appearance. At the same time, she was coping with the heartbreaking loss of her mother, who died from breast cancer in 1996 while Wilson was filming Matilda. Grieving such a profound loss while navigating fame made childhood increasingly overwhelming, and she later admitted that despite her success, those years were some of the unhappiest of her life.

By the age of 11, Wilson’s final major film role came in Thomas and the Magic Railroad. As puberty changed her appearance, casting opportunities became scarce, reinforcing her belief that Hollywood favored child actors only while they fit a certain image. Looking back, she has said the entertainment industry made her feel that if she was no longer “cute” or “beautiful,” she was no longer valuable—a mindset she later recognized as deeply unhealthy.

Today, Wilson has found a new path as a successful writer and speaker. She published the memoirs Where Am I Now? True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame and Good Girls Don’t, reflecting on childhood stardom, grief, identity, and life beyond Hollywood. Rather than chasing the spotlight, Wilson says she has found happiness in telling her own stories, proving that life after child fame can still be meaningful and fulfilling.
