Vincent D’Onofrio became almost unrecognizable for his breakthrough role as the troubled Marine recruit Leonard in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. Already a tall, athletic actor, D’Onofrio gained roughly 70–80 pounds for the part, reaching about 280 pounds, and shaved his head. The transformation was so convincing that it affected how people treated him even after filming.

D’Onofrio later recalled that women who had once noticed him seemed to avoid him, while strangers sometimes spoke to him as though he were actually unintelligent. His appearance had become so closely associated with Leonard that people struggled to separate the actor from the disturbed character he portrayed.
