Alex Batty was just 11 when he disappeared during a 2017 trip to Spain with his mother, Melanie, and grandfather, David. His grandmother, Susan Caruana, reported him missing after he failed to return to the UK. For six years, Alex’s whereabouts remained a mystery, until December 2023, when a French delivery driver named Fabien Accidini spotted a teenager walking alone in heavy rain near Toulouse.

Fabien stopped and offered him a ride. At first, the boy gave the name “Zach,” but after speaking for several hours, he revealed his true identity. He was Alex Batty. He told Fabien that he had been living with his mother and others away from mainstream society and desperately wanted to return to his grandmother. Fabien immediately contacted police, while Alex used his phone to call Susan.

Alex later explained that life off-grid had become unbearable. He described living in a tent, sometimes eating only once a day, doing manual work, and missing school and a normal childhood. He said hearing schoolchildren nearby made him realize how much he wanted a different life.
After returning to Britain, Alex admitted that his feelings toward his mother were complicated. Despite being angry about the years he had lost and the lack of education, he still expressed love for her. Today, Alex has rebuilt his life and even become a father himself. His extraordinary disappearance and eventual return remain a powerful story of resilience, family, and finding the courage to seek freedom.
