With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of this beloved actress who graced our TV screens for decades

Cheryl Hall, the beloved British actress known for her memorable roles in Citizen Smith and Doctor Who, has died at the age of 76. News of her passing was shared by actor Robin Askwith, who dated Hall in the 1970s and described her as a “force of nature” and a brave, charismatic actress who left a lasting impression on those around her.

Hall began her acting career in the late 1960s and went on to appear in numerous popular British productions. Her television credits included On the Buses, The Bill, Poirot, Inspector Morse, Grange Hill, Casualty, Silent Witness and EastEnders. Doctor Who fans will remember her as Shirna in the 1973 story Carnival of Monsters.

Her connection to Citizen Smith was particularly memorable. Hall played Shirley Johnson, the girlfriend of Robert Lindsay’s character, Wolfie Smith. The two actors eventually married in 1974 and remained together until 1980. Hall also came close to becoming Doctor Who history in another way, having been considered for the role of Jo Grant before Katy Manning was ultimately cast.

Beyond acting, Hall entered politics, standing as a Labour candidate in the 1997 general election and later serving on Kent County Council. She continued balancing public service, motherhood and her career. For generations of British television viewers, her passing marks the loss of a familiar and much-loved face. Her legacy will live on through the many characters and performances that made her unforgettable.
