Florida deputy delivers baby after pulling over car speeding to hospital

Florida Deputy Robert Pounds thought he was making a routine traffic stop when he spotted a car traveling 63 mph in a 45 mph zone around 4:30 a.m. in Naples. But when he approached the vehicle, the driver, Wilfrid Jean-Louis, quickly explained that his wife, Fabienne Gorges, was in labor. “We have a baby coming out… That’s the reason why I’m speeding, officer. I don’t know what to do,” he told the deputy.

Pounds immediately called for paramedics and backup, but there wasn’t enough time to wait. He grabbed a blanket and helped Fabienne deliver the baby right there on the side of the road. The deputy made sure the newborn girl was breathing and that her mother was okay while waiting for emergency medical crews to arrive.

When paramedics arrived, they cut the umbilical cord and transported the mother and newborn to the hospital. What started as a speeding violation had suddenly turned into one of the most unforgettable traffic stops of the deputy’s career. Pounds later joked that officers hear plenty of excuses for speeding, but admitted this was “a pretty reasonable excuse.”

The story became even more touching when the family reportedly named their daughter Leila Robert Jean-Louis in honor of the officer who helped bring her safely into the world. A routine early-morning traffic stop became a life-changing moment for everyone involved—and one that Deputy Pounds and the family are unlikely to ever forget.
