Should You Pay for Your Coworker’s Gas?

If a coworker lives near your house and drives you to work every day, you’re not necessarily legally obligated to pay for gas, but it’s generally considered fair and considerate to offer. You’re benefiting from their fuel, vehicle, time, and effort, especially if they are making a small detour to pick you up. A regular ride should ideally feel like a shared arrangement rather than a one-sided favor.

The amount doesn’t have to be complicated. If your coworker was already driving the same route to work, you could offer a reasonable weekly or monthly contribution toward fuel. If they have to leave earlier or make a significant detour specifically to pick you up, contributing a little more would be appropriate. You don’t necessarily need to split every expense or calculate every mile.

Remember that gasoline isn’t the only cost involved in driving. Regular passengers also benefit from the use of the vehicle while the driver takes on maintenance, tires, depreciation, and other expenses. That doesn’t mean you should pay half of everything, but it’s another reason why offering something toward the commute is a thoughtful gesture.

The easiest approach is simply to say: “I really appreciate you driving me to work every day. I’d like to contribute something for gas—how much do you think is fair?” If they genuinely refuse money, you could occasionally buy them coffee, lunch, or give them a gas-station gift card. The important thing is to offer rather than assume the rides should be free.
