This insecure and ‘odd’ baby with severe asthma grew up to become one of the most iconic artists in the world

Ricky Nelson grew up in Hollywood as the shy, asthma-plagued son of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, stars of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Despite being described as an “odd little kid,” Ricky became a household name after joining the family show. At 17, he recorded “I’m Walking,” which became a major hit and launched a remarkable music career. Songs like “Poor Little Fool,” “Travelin’ Man,” and “Garden Party” eventually made him one of America’s most beloved performers.

By the 1960s, Ricky had become a successful musician and actor, but flying was something he reportedly hated. In December 1985, he was scheduled to travel to Dallas for a New Year’s Eve performance, and his twin sons, Matthew and Gunnar, were supposed to accompany him. However, shortly before the trip, Ricky unexpectedly called his sons and told them not to fly with him. That last-minute decision would ultimately save their lives.

Ricky boarded a DC-3 without his sons, but during the flight the cabin suddenly filled with smoke and fire. The pilot managed to land the aircraft safely, but Ricky and the other passengers died in the accident. The exact cause of the fire became the subject of years of speculation, although members of Nelson’s family believed a mechanical problem involving the aircraft’s gasoline-powered heater may have been responsible.

Matthew and Gunnar survived because their father had changed their travel plans at the last moment. The twins later formed the rock band Nelson and continued making music, often describing their work as a tribute to their father. Ricky Nelson’s death remains tragic, but his final decision to keep his sons off that plane became an unforgettable part of his family’s story—and a heartbreaking reminder of how one small decision can change everything.
