I barely felt the cold floor beneath me. “Emma!” someone shouted as strong hands caught my shoulders. When I opened my eyes, General Warner was kneeling beside me, still holding the envelope. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “We should have come sooner.” I stared at him, my voice shaking. “What is that?” He looked toward Mia. “It’s something Liam asked me to give his little girl if he couldn’t be here tonight.”
Mia stepped closer, her tears still shining on her cheeks. “Is it from Daddy?” she whispered. General Warner nodded and carefully placed the envelope in her hands. On the front, written in Liam’s unmistakable handwriting, were three words: For My Ladybug. Mia held it against her chest before slowly opening it. Inside was a letter that made my heart stop all over again.
“My sweet Mia-Bug, if you’re reading this, I couldn’t keep my promise to dance with you tonight. But please don’t think I forgot. I asked my brothers to find you and make sure you never dance alone. Be brave, smile big, and remember that Daddy will always be dancing with you in your heart. I love you forever.”
Mia pressed the letter against her chest and burst into tears. Then General Warner stood and offered his hand. “Your father gave us one final order, ma’am. May I have this dance?” Mia looked at me, and through my tears, I nodded. She took his hand. One by one, the Marines stepped onto the dance floor, surrounding my little girl. And as she laughed for the first time in months, I realized Liam had kept his promise after all.
