Shelley Fabares, 82, Who Battled a Life-Threatening Health Crisis While Her ‘M*A*S*H’ Star Husband, Mike Farrell, Stood by Her Side, Has Died

Shelley Fabares, the beloved actress known for The Donna Reed Show and Coach, has died at 82. Her family confirmed that she passed away on August 22, 2026, in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones. She began acting as a child and became a household name as Mary Stone before later finding another generation of fans as Christine Armstrong on Coach.

Behind her successful career, however, Fabares endured a terrifying health battle. In 1994, she suffered a serious accident that left her with multiple broken ribs. During her treatment, doctors discovered abnormal liver tests. Years later, in 1999, she experienced a life-threatening esophageal bleed and was diagnosed with irreversible liver failure. She ultimately spent 22 months waiting for a liver transplant.

The long wait was physically and emotionally exhausting, but Fabares never faced it alone. Her husband, MASH* star Mike Farrell, stood beside her throughout the ordeal, attending appointments and helping care for her as her condition worsened. In later interviews, Fabares credited him with giving her strength and said the experience ultimately brought them even closer together.

On October 23, 2000, Fabares finally received the call that could save her life. She underwent a successful liver transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and went on to enjoy many more years. She later devoted time to causes including Alzheimer’s research and humanitarian work. Her legacy will be remembered not only for her remarkable television career, but also for the courage she showed during one of the darkest chapters of her life.
