VSISION TEST: Count the Oranges.

At first glance, this looks like one of those puzzles that should take only a few seconds to solve. You see a bowl filled with oranges and the question seems straightforward: How many are there? Most people immediately start counting the clearly visible fruit, but the arrangement makes the answer less obvious than it appears.

If you count every orange that is at least partly visible, the picture appears to contain 11 oranges. Some are completely exposed, while others are partially covered by the oranges in front of them. Depending on how quickly you scan the image, it’s surprisingly easy to miss one and arrive at 10—or count the shapes differently and get 12.

But here’s the catch: 11 is only the number we can see. The photograph doesn’t show everything inside the bowl. One or more oranges could theoretically be completely hidden behind the visible ones, meaning the actual number could be 12, 13, or even more. There simply isn’t enough information in a single image to determine the total with certainty.

And that’s what makes this more than just a vision test. The puzzle is really testing observation and critical thinking. Before confidently giving an answer, ask yourself what the image actually proves. So, if the question is “How many oranges can you see?” the answer is 11. But if it asks how many oranges are actually in the bowl, the most accurate answer is: we can’t know for sure.
