HAVE YOU NOTICED HARD BUMPS GROWING ON YOUR FINGER JOINTS? DON’T IGNORE THEM. They may look like harmless little lumps, but those hard, bony bumps near your fingertips can sometimes be a sign of changes happening inside your joints. For many people, especially as they get older, these bumps are known as Heberden’s nodes and are commonly associated with osteoarthritis.
🖐️ Heberden’s nodes develop when the cartilage protecting a finger joint gradually wears down. As the joint changes, the body can form extra bone around it, creating a firm bump that can become increasingly noticeable. Some people experience pain, tenderness, stiffness, swelling or reduced flexibility, while others have the bumps with surprisingly little discomfort. Over time, additional fingers may become affected.
⚠️ But not every finger bump is necessarily osteoarthritis. Other conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, can also cause pain, swelling and changes in the hands. If a joint suddenly becomes very painful, red, hot or significantly swollen—or if symptoms are rapidly getting worse—it’s important to have it checked by a healthcare professional. An examination and, when needed, an X-ray can help determine what’s actually happening.
❤️ The good news is that there are ways to manage symptoms and protect hand function. Gentle finger exercises, avoiding unnecessary strain, warmth or cold, supportive splints and appropriate medications may help, depending on the cause. If your fingers have started changing shape, don’t simply assume it’s “just aging.” Your hands work hard for you every day—give them the attention they deserve.
