My Neighbor Constantly Borrowed My Appliances – When She Returned My Mixer Dirty and Broken, I Taught Her a Lesson

The next morning, I took the mixer to a repair shop. The technician opened it up and shook his head. The motor had been overloaded and kept running after it started struggling. The repair would cost $347. I sent Denise the estimate, hoping she’d finally understand. Instead, she replied, “LOL, absolutely not. It’s ancient. You should be thanking me for giving you a reason to replace it.” I stared at the message. She didn’t understand that I wasn’t trying to replace a machine. I was trying to hold on to one of the last pieces of my mother I had left.

Three days later, Denise came over needing my cooler, crock pot, two folding tables, and drink dispenser for her niece’s graduation party. This time, I handed her a clipboard. Every item was listed with its replacement value, return deadline, and a $350 refundable deposit. The $347 mixer repair was listed separately. Denise called me petty, but with forty guests arriving, she reluctantly signed and paid. I helped carry everything over anyway. I wasn’t trying to ruin her party. I just wanted her to understand that other people’s things deserved to be treated with care.

On Sunday, everything came back spotless and on time. I returned her $350 deposit and kept the $347 for the repair. Denise looked angry, then embarrassed. Finally, she whispered, “I shouldn’t have left it dirty. And I shouldn’t have blamed you.” I nodded. “If you’d just apologized, we’d never have gotten here.” For once, she had no excuse.

Two days later, I picked up the repaired mixer. Greg plugged it in, and that familiar hum filled the shop. Smooth. Steady. The same sound I’d heard every Sunday growing up. That weekend, Sophie and I made Mom’s chocolate cake. As the paddle turned, I closed my eyes and could almost picture Mom in her kitchen again, flour on her hands. The mixer wasn’t just an appliance. It was a piece of her. And somehow, I’d gotten it back. Denise never borrowed anything carelessly again. Months later, she asked for my pressure washer and joked, “Do I need to sign one of those forms?” I smiled. “You already know the rules.” ❤️
