Then Mom Locked Me in My Room and Whispered, “There’s Something You Don’t Know About Him”

Mom took a shaky breath. “Six years ago, after your father left, you were struggling more than you ever told me. You stopped eating lunch, stopped talking, and barely smiled. I was terrified I was losing you.” I stared at her, confused. “What does that have to do with Micah?” Mom wiped a tear from her cheek. “One afternoon, I found him waiting outside my car. He had seen me crying. He asked if you were okay, and when I told him I didn’t know how to help you, he made me a promise.”

My heart began pounding. “What promise?” Mom looked directly at me. “He said, ‘I can’t make Celia happy. But I can stay with her.’” I covered my mouth. Suddenly, all those memories came rushing back—the lunches when he sat beside me without asking questions, the stupid baseball stories, the ice cream after my worst days. Mom continued, “I asked him to stay close to you. He never told you because he didn’t want you to feel like you owed him anything.”

I felt tears sliding down my face. “And you kept this from me for six years?” Mom nodded. “Because I was ashamed. I kept wondering whether you were staying friends with Micah because you felt responsible for him. I never realized how much he was giving you too.” She squeezed my hands. “Tonight, when he said he remembered promises, I realized something. That little boy kept his promise every single day.”

I laughed through my tears. “Mom, I’m going downstairs.” She smiled. “Because of the promise?” I shook my head. “No. Because he’s my best friend.” When I opened the door, Micah was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, still holding my corsage. He smiled. “Ready?” I walked over, hooked my arm through his, and nodded. “Always.” And for the first time, I understood: our friendship had never been about one of us taking care of the other. We had simply chosen, again and again, to stay. ❤️
