If You Ever Spot This Insect, Get Rid of It Immediately!

It may look beautiful, with dark spots on its wings and flashes of bright red underneath, but the spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that can harm plants and agriculture. Native to parts of Asia, it was first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014 and has continued spreading. 🌳⚠️ If you think you see one, the FIRST thing to do is identify it. Take a clear photo and compare it with trusted local identification information before doing anything else.

Large populations feed on plant sap and can weaken trees and other plants. They also produce a sticky substance called honeydew, which can cover leaves, cars, outdoor furniture, and other surfaces. Honeydew can encourage black sooty mold to grow, creating another problem for affected plants. 🌿😳

Adults are about an inch long, with grayish wings covered in black spots and bright red hindwings. Young lanternflies look completely different—they start as small black insects with white spots before developing red coloring. Their egg masses can resemble patches of dried mud and may appear on trees, vehicles, outdoor equipment, and other hard surfaces. 👀

Once you’ve confirmed the insect, follow your local agriculture or environmental authority’s instructions. An isolated adult or nymph may sometimes be physically removed, while larger infestations may need professional treatment. Don’t automatically spray your yard, since pesticides can harm beneficial insects and wildlife. And remember, lanternflies do not bite or sting people. 🌱❤️ Identify first. Act second. Follow local guidance.
