Chilling last words of hero flight attendant who made first 9/11 call from Flight 11

etty Ong wasn’t even supposed to be working that day. On September 11, 2001, the 45-year-old American Airlines flight attendant had picked up an extra shift aboard Flight 11, planning to meet her sisters in Los Angeles before traveling to Hawaii. Shortly after takeoff, hijackers seized control. At 8:19 a.m., Betty made the first known report from the aircraft, calmly telling American Airlines that the flight was being hijacked. 😔

Despite the chaos around her, Betty stayed on the phone for roughly 23 minutes, providing critical information about the passengers, injuries, and suspected hijackers. She never knew whether anyone on the ground could stop what was happening, but she continued communicating as calmly as she could. Her call helped alert airline officials and became an important part of the early response to the attacks.

At 8:46 a.m., Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower, killing everyone aboard. Betty’s family in California initially had no idea she was on the plane. Her brother Harry later recalled repeatedly calling American Airlines and leaving messages on her phone, hoping desperately that his sister would somehow respond. Years later, he said the pain of losing her never truly disappeared. 💔

Before contact was lost, Betty left behind a heartbreaking final request: “Pray for us.” Those words were later remembered during the 9/11 Commission hearings. Betty Ong became one of the many ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage that morning—staying calm, helping others, and sounding the alarm while facing unimaginable danger. Her courage and memory remain part of the story of September 11. 🕊️
