Her son became a world-famous celebrity, but his mother’s tragic past is worse than you can imagine

Long before she became known as Justin Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette had already survived an extraordinarily difficult childhood. ❤️ Born in Ontario in 1975, Pattie experienced devastating loss as a young child and later described years of abuse and trauma. As a teenager, she struggled with substance use, shoplifting, and serious emotional difficulties. At 17, after battling suicidal thoughts, she attempted to take her own life and was hospitalized.

Not long afterward, Pattie reconnected with Jeremy Bieber, and she became pregnant with Justin, who was born in 1994. She was just 18 when he was born and raised him largely as a single mother, with help from her parents. Despite their financial struggles, Pattie encouraged Justin’s love of music and performance. When he entered a local talent competition as a teenager, she filmed his performance and posted it online — helping put his talent in front of a much larger audience. 🎤

Justin eventually became a global superstar, but fame also brought difficult moments for their family. His legal troubles in 2014 created a rift between mother and son, and Justin later admitted that he knew he had disappointed her. Their relationship took time to rebuild, but the two eventually moved forward and publicly expressed their love and support for one another.

Pattie later shared her story in her memoir Nowhere but Up, describing how she tried to turn years of pain into something positive. Her journey from a troubled teenager to a devoted mother and author became an important part of her story. Her past was incredibly difficult, but she continued moving forward — and remained proud of the son she helped raise.
