Why Baggage Handlers Say You Should Never Tie a Ribbon to Your Suitcase

A colorful ribbon around your suitcase handle seems like the perfect travel hack. After all, when dozens of nearly identical black bags circle the baggage carousel, a bright red or yellow ribbon makes yours easy to recognize. But there’s a catch: loose ribbons and decorations can potentially interfere with baggage-handling equipment. Checked luggage travels through conveyors, rollers, scanners, chutes, carts, and other systems where anything dangling from a bag can potentially catch or become tangled.

That doesn’t mean every ribbon will cause a problem. Millions of suitcases travel successfully with tags and accessories every day. The concern is simply that anything loose or protruding creates an avoidable snag risk. A ribbon could become caught, pulled off, damaged, or even contribute to a handling interruption. The same principle applies to long luggage straps, oversized bows, dangling keychains, loose cords, and other accessories. For checked bags, keeping everything compact and secure is generally the smarter approach. ⚠️

Fortunately, you don’t have to sacrifice visibility. A bright luggage tag, distinctive suitcase, fitted luggage cover, or small secure identifier can make your bag just as easy to spot without leaving something loose around the handle. It’s also smart to remove old airline baggage tags before every trip and make sure your current identification information is secure. And here’s a simple trick many travelers overlook: take a clear photo of your suitcase before checking it. If the bag is delayed or misplaced, that photo can make describing it much easier.

So before your next flight, give your suitcase a quick inspection: remove loose decorations, secure straps, clear away old tags, and photograph the bag. 🧳📸 The goal isn’t to make your luggage boring — it’s to make it easy to recognize, easy to handle, and less likely to create unnecessary problems while moving through the airport. Your bright ribbon may help you spot the bag, but a secure identifier can do the same job with fewer potential complications.
