A Simple Math Puzzle: Can You Get It Right?

Think this equation is easy? Take a closer look: 4 + 4 ÷ 4 + 4. At first, some people may quickly answer 16 by adding all the numbers together, but there’s a simple rule that changes everything. This puzzle is a great reminder that when an equation contains different operations, you can’t simply treat every symbol the same way. 👀

The key is the order of operations. Whether you learned it as PEMDAS or BODMAS, the basic idea is that multiplication and division are handled before addition and subtraction. When multiplication and division appear together, they have equal priority and are evaluated from left to right. The same principle applies to addition and subtraction.

Now apply that rule to the equation. Before doing any addition, look for the division: 4 ÷ 4 = 1. Replace that part of the equation with 1, and you’re left with 4 + 1 + 4. At this point, there is only addition, so simply work from left to right. Four plus one equals five, and five plus four gives the final result. 🧠✨

So, did you get it? The correct answer is 9! 🎯 The tempting answer of 16 comes from ignoring the division and adding all four numbers together. It’s a small example, but it shows why the order of operations matters—and why sometimes the easiest-looking math problem deserves a second look.
