Should You Remove the Bedding or Make Up the Bed Before Leaving as a Houseguest?

One of those surprisingly tricky houseguest questions is what to do with the bed before you leave. Should you strip the sheets or make the bed neatly? There isn’t one universal rule because every household has different habits. The safest approach is to follow your host’s instructions. If they ask you to remove the bedding or provide a clear place for used linens, do that. Otherwise, leaving the bed neatly made is usually a considerate choice. 🏡

If your host has mentioned putting sheets or towels in a laundry room or hamper, that’s your answer. Stripping the bed generally means removing the fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcases, and any washable covers you were specifically asked to remove. You normally don’t need to remove mattress protectors, duvet inserts, decorative pillows, or other layers unless your host requests it. When there are no instructions or obvious laundry arrangements, it’s better not to guess.

Making the bed can be especially helpful when you aren’t sure what your host prefers. Straighten the sheets, arrange the pillows, and leave the room looking tidy and close to how you found it. The same idea applies to towels: use the designated hamper if there is one, and avoid leaving damp towels crumpled on furniture or the floor. You don’t need to start doing laundry unless your host specifically asks you to.

Ultimately, good houseguest etiquette is less about following a rigid rule and more about making things easier for your host. Before leaving, collect your belongings, remove personal trash, tidy obvious messes, and check whether your host gave any specific instructions. And if you’re still unsure, simply ask: “Would you like me to strip the bed or leave it made?” A quick question can prevent unnecessary work and is often the most considerate choice. ✨
