Behind homelessness are often complicated stories involving financial hardship, addiction, family breakdown, mental health struggles, illness, or several problems at once. The experiences are different for every person, and listening to them can offer a better understanding of how quickly someone’s circumstances can change. For some, losing a job or being unable to afford housing was the beginning of a downward spiral.
Paul Curtis, for example, lost his home after losing his job and going through the breakdown of his marriage. Unable to keep up with his mortgage, he eventually experienced homelessness and later lived on a small boat. Others described different paths. Jorge Ortega spent years working at LAX before drug addiction cost him his job and housing, while Tony returned to heroin after the devastating death of his son. Carolina Ryan said severe anxiety contributed to her losing work and eventually having nowhere to stay.
Housing costs and health problems have also played major roles. Veteran James Harris, who had lived with AIDS for decades, said his limited monthly income could not cover Los Angeles housing costs. Pandora Parks became homeless as a teenager after difficult experiences at home, while Alain lost his housing after being left to raise three young children alone. Willie Woods described how substance abuse and undiagnosed depression contributed to his struggles after leaving the Marines.
Other stories show just how unexpected circumstances can become. David spent his savings on medical treatment for his rescued dog, eventually losing his apartment, while Tammy Stephen said her husband’s meth addiction repeatedly contributed to their evictions. These accounts show that homelessness rarely has one simple explanation. Behind every person without a home is an individual story shaped by circumstances, choices, hardships, and events that can be difficult to imagine from the outside. ❤️
