Driver’s Surprised to Learn What ‘G’ Means on a Manual Stick Shift

If you have ever seen a “G” on a manual gear shifter, you may have wondered what it means. Unlike the familiar 1-to-6 pattern, this unusual marking appears mainly on certain older trucks, off-road vehicles and specialized models. The letter comes from the German word Gelände, meaning “terrain,” and is associated with the concept of an ultra-low gear designed for difficult surfaces.

A G or “granny” gear uses an extremely low ratio, providing maximum torque at very low speeds. That makes it useful for climbing steep hills, pulling heavy loads, crawling over rocks, crossing mud or sand, and preventing a heavily loaded vehicle from stalling. Early commercial trucks relied on these gears because their engines had far less torque than modern powertrains. Ratios could be around 6:1 or higher, compared with roughly 3:1 to 4:1 for many conventional first gears.

The concept has an interesting connection to the Porsche 959. Its 1986 six-speed manual transmission used a “G” position partly as a solution to noise regulations. The unusually low gear helped keep engine speeds down during regulatory testing, while also proving useful in slow-moving traffic and off-road conditions. Similar crawler gearing later appeared in vehicles such as the 2021 Ford Bronco, which brought the dedicated low-speed gear back to a modern production SUV.

Today, most drivers rarely encounter a G gear because automatic transmissions dominate and modern engines provide much more low-end torque. However, the marking is not a mistake or meaningless leftover. Whether found in an old truck, a Mercedes G-Wagen, a Porsche 959 or a modern off-road vehicle, its purpose is essentially the same: very low speed, increased torque and precise control when ordinary gears aren’t enough. 🚙
