McDonald’s Is Bringing Back Something That’s Been Missing from Menus Since the ’90s

Fast-food fans love when long-lost favorites return, and McDonald’s is bringing back one that hasn’t been on its menus for about 30 years. While items like the McRib and Shamrock Shake regularly make seasonal appearances, this comeback is much rarer. Longtime fans who remember the original Fried Apple Pie will finally have a chance to enjoy the nostalgic treat once again.

The mystery item is the Fried Apple Pie, a deep-fried version of McDonald’s famous apple dessert. Unlike the baked pie many customers know today, this version features a crispy, bubbly crust surrounding warm apple-and-cinnamon filling. Its story dates back to the 1960s, when Tennessee franchise owner Litton Cochran wanted something special for his restaurant. His wife, Jo, spent months perfecting the recipe, which quickly became a regional favorite before expanding nationwide.

Despite its popularity, the Fried Apple Pie disappeared from McDonald’s menus in the early 1990s, leaving longtime fans without their favorite crispy dessert for decades. Now, after years of waiting, customers will once again have the opportunity to experience the original fried version and its nostalgic flavor.

The Fried Apple Pie is scheduled to return at participating McDonald’s locations nationwide beginning June 23. It will reportedly be available throughout the day, meaning customers can even pair one with their morning coffee. However, the comeback is expected to last only a few weeks, so fans who have been waiting decades may want to enjoy it while it’s available.
