Imagine boarding a cruise ship with around 2,000 passengers where going without clothes is part of the experience. Bare Necessities organizes clothing-optional cruises for travelers who embrace nudism, but being naked doesn’t mean there are no rules. Kat Whitmire, a longtime organizer with the company, explained that respecting others and maintaining a comfortable atmosphere are essential parts of life aboard the ship.

Whitmire first became involved after a photographer friend invited her and her husband to model on one of the cruises. She later joined the company’s sales team in 2010 and eventually became a full-time organizer. She explained that nudism isn’t intended to be sexual, but rather a lifestyle that not everyone understands or feels comfortable trying. One important rule is that passengers must ask permission before taking photographs that include other guests, protecting everyone’s privacy. 📸
The biggest surprise for many newcomers is the dining-room dress code. Although clothing is optional in many areas of the ship, guests must cover themselves properly when eating in the formal dining room. Whitmire sums up the rule with the memorable phrase “No nips, no bits, and no butts.” Transparent fabrics, mesh and string-only coverings aren’t allowed, partly because waitstaff need to carry trays of hot food safely between tables.
Interestingly, nudists also enjoy dressing up for themed events. Whitmire recalled a passenger who dressed as a tequila bottle, complete with a cork on his head and a creative costume that made her laugh uncontrollably. 😂 The unusual cruises combine freedom, socializing and strict boundaries designed to keep everyone comfortable. Would you ever try a clothing-optional cruise, or is this kind of holiday not for you?
