Bride Sparks Family Debate After Demanding a Minimum $150 Wedding Gift

Weddings are meant to celebrate love and bring families together, but one bride’s request has left guests questioning wedding etiquette. A woman was surprised when her own sister sent out invitations stating that a minimum cash gift of $150 was expected to cover the cost of each guest’s meal. While weddings can be expensive, the demand raised an uncomfortable question: should guests be required to pay a specific amount to attend?

Couples often prefer cash gifts to help fund a honeymoon, buy a home or start their married life together. There is nothing inherently wrong with expressing that preference. However, asking for cash is very different from making a minimum contribution mandatory. Wedding etiquette generally treats gifts as voluntary gestures, not payments guests owe for food, drinks or entertainment. ❤️

The popular idea of “covering your plate” suggests that guests should give enough to match the cost of their meal. However, it is not a universal rule, and guests have no control over the venue, catering choices or overall wedding budget. A $150 gift might be affordable for some people but create genuine financial stress for others. No one should feel pressured to sacrifice essential expenses or go into debt to meet a wedding gift demand.

Since the bride is her sister, the woman could address the issue calmly by explaining that she is happy to celebrate the marriage but will give what she can comfortably afford. She could also ask whether the amount is a strict requirement or merely a suggestion. Ultimately, couples can share their preferences, but guests must decide what works for their circumstances. Do you think requiring a minimum $150 wedding gift is reasonable, or should gifts always be voluntary?
