Large Hornet Near a Swollen Skin Lesion Raises Health and Safety Concerns

The image appears to show a large hornet resembling an Asian giant hornet, commonly nicknamed the “murder hornet,” near a swollen, inflamed area on a person’s shoulder or back. Tweezers and a cotton swab are positioned nearby, suggesting an attempt to examine or remove something from the affected skin. However, the image alone cannot establish whether the insect caused the swelling or identify the underlying skin condition.

Hornet stings can cause significant pain, redness and swelling, and some people experience severe allergic reactions. Multiple stings can also cause serious complications, particularly when a large amount of venom enters the body. Although dramatic swelling may look alarming, tissue damage or infection cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone.

Another concern is attempting to squeeze, puncture or drain an inflamed skin lesion at home. Using tools without proper medical guidance can damage the skin, introduce bacteria and worsen an existing infection. A painful, increasingly red, hot or swollen area should be assessed by a healthcare professional, especially if the symptoms are spreading or accompanied by fever.

Emergency medical care is essential if a person develops difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, faintness or other signs of a severe allergic reaction after a sting. If the swelling is rapidly worsening or severe pain develops, prompt medical evaluation is also important. The safest approach is to avoid manipulating the affected area and have a professional determine the cause before attempting any treatment.
