The first thing you notice is the speed. One moment, the floor is empty; the next, a strange creature with dozens of legs races across it. At 2 a.m., I spotted one near my bathroom doorway and froze. Its long antennae, striped body, and countless legs made it look like something straight out of a horror movie. But what I learned afterward completely changed my perspective.
Despite their frightening appearance, house centipedes are generally harmless to humans and prefer avoiding us. They thrive in dark, damp places such as bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms, where their prey is plentiful. Surprisingly, their diet includes cockroaches, silverfish, ants, spiders, moths, and other household pests. Rather than being unwanted invaders themselves, they may be hunting insects you haven’t even noticed.
House centipedes are nocturnal predators, using their incredible speed to catch small insects. Although they possess venom, it is primarily adapted to subdue their prey. Bites to humans are rare and usually cause only mild, temporary pain or irritation. Their sudden movements can still be startling, but looking frightening doesn’t necessarily mean something is dangerous.
If you want fewer centipedes indoors, try reducing humidity, fixing leaks, sealing cracks, and controlling other insects. Some people choose to trap and release them rather than kill them. Even knowing their benefits, I still jump when one suddenly appears. But now I see them differently: they’re tiny nighttime hunters doing a job nature designed them for. 🏡 Sometimes, the creature that scares you most is actually helping keep worse pests away.
