Bladder cancer survivors speak out on ‘most common’ first symptom they all had before diagnosis

Blood in the urine can be an early warning sign of bladder cancer, even when it appears only once and causes no pain. Survivors Arthur Hamberger and Margo Wickersham both noticed a faint pink discoloration before doctors discovered their tumors. Their experiences highlight why unusual changes in urine should never be ignored, even when someone otherwise feels perfectly healthy.

Hamberger noticed a slight pink tint in his urine in 2018. Having survived cancer three times, he decided to seek medical attention. Tests revealed a large bladder tumor and a mass in his pancreas. Doctors removed the bladder tumor without removing his bladder, and he also underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer. Hamberger later explained that the small amount of blood may have helped doctors discover both conditions.

Wickersham noticed pink blood in her urine on two consecutive mornings when she was 57. Initially, she was tested for a urinary tract infection (UTI), but the results did not explain the bleeding. A subsequent examination using a cystoscope revealed a small tumor, and she was diagnosed with aggressive stage 1 bladder cancer. Further testing also identified a rare form known as plasmacytoid bladder cancer, which can be particularly challenging to treat. Despite the diagnosis, she had felt completely healthy apart from the bleeding.

Blood in the urine is the most common warning sign of bladder cancer, according to health authorities, but other symptoms can include frequent urination, burning or pain when urinating, sudden urges to use the bathroom, lower abdominal or back pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue. These symptoms can have many causes and do not automatically indicate cancer. However, visible blood in the urine should always be medically assessed, even if it happens only once or disappears. Early evaluation can help identify the cause and ensure appropriate treatment.
