According To Laundry Experts, You Should Be Washing Your Sheets At Least Once A Week

Even when your bedding looks clean, it can collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, dust, and other residue while you sleep. These materials build up in sheets and pillowcases over time, making regular washing an important part of household hygiene. Laundry experts generally recommend changing and washing your bedding once a week.

One major reason is dust mites. These tiny creatures feed on shed skin cells and can live in mattresses, pillows, and bedding. Their waste and body fragments may trigger allergies, causing sneezing, itchy eyes, a stuffy nose, coughing, or worsening asthma symptoms. Weekly washing helps reduce accumulated allergens, although mattress covers, vacuuming, and controlling indoor humidity can also help.

Washing less often can allow unpleasant odors, oils, and allergens to build up. Experts also recommend washing bedding more frequently if you sweat heavily, are sick, have allergies, share your bed with pets, or have a contagious skin infection. Always check fabric care labels: hot water around 130°F (54°C) or higher can help kill dust mites when the material can tolerate it. Pillows, duvet covers, comforters, and mattress protectors need regular attention too.

Making the chore easier can be as simple as keeping an extra sheet set, using a washable duvet cover, and choosing one day each week for laundry. Most importantly, dry bedding completely before putting it back on the bed to prevent trapped moisture and potential mold growth. Fresh sheets aren’t just about comfort and a pleasant smell—they help keep your sleeping environment cleaner. ✨
