As life draws to a close, many people reflect on the choices they made and the dreams they never pursued. Former palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware, who spent eight years caring for terminally ill patients, documented the regrets she heard most often in her book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. According to Ware, these were the five most common: 1. Not living authentically – following others’ expectations instead of personal dreams; 2. Working too hard – sacrificing too much time for a career; 3. Hiding their feelings – not having the courage to express what they truly felt; 4. Losing touch with friends – failing to maintain important friendships; and 5. Not allowing themselves to be happy – staying stuck in familiar routines instead of choosing joy.
The first regret appeared most frequently. Many people realized they had spent years living according to what others expected rather than pursuing the life they truly wanted. The pressure to succeed can also come at a cost: a 2023 Harris Poll found that 78% of American workers were leaving vacation days unused, often putting work ahead of rest and personal time.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates reflected on a similar lesson during a 2023 university commencement speech. He admitted that when he was younger, he didn’t believe in weekends, vacations, or taking time off. Becoming a father eventually helped him understand that there is more to life than work. He encouraged people to nurture relationships, celebrate their achievements, and make time to recover from life’s challenges.
Ware’s message is that happiness, meaningful relationships, and personal fulfillment should not be postponed until life becomes less busy. Her final advice is simple but powerful: “Life is a choice. It is your life. Choose consciously. Choose wisely. Choose honestly. Choose happiness.” 🌿
