The original hourglass: The model who changed the standards of beauty and power

Born Annie Blanche Banks on February 29, 1928, in Georgia, Tempest Storm rose from a difficult childhood to become one of burlesque’s most famous performers. After leaving home as a teenager, she eventually made her way to Los Angeles, where a casting agent suggested the stage name that would become legendary. Her journey began in the late 1940s, when she traded cocktail waitressing for the spotlight, captivating audiences with fiery red hair, confidence, and glamorous performances.

By the 1950s, Storm was reportedly earning $100,000 a year, an enormous sum at the time. Her famous curves even became the subject of headlines claiming they were insured for $1 million. Unlike many performers, she favored elegant choreography, sparkling costumes, and theatrical teasing rather than simply shocking audiences. She appeared in films including Teaserama (1955) and Buxom Beautease (1956), sharing the screen with stars such as Bettie Page. Her popularity was so immense that a 1955 appearance at the University of Colorado attracted a crowd of around 1,500 students.

Her personal life also made headlines. She was linked romantically to celebrities including Elvis Presley and Mickey Rooney, but her 1959 marriage to jazz musician Herb Jeffries attracted particular attention. Their interracial marriage challenged racial taboos of the era and reportedly cost Storm professional opportunities. The couple had a daughter, Patricia Ann, and although the marriage eventually ended, their relationship remained an important chapter in her life.

Storm continued performing well into her later years, returning to the stage in 1999 for a celebration at San Francisco’s O’Farrell Theatre. Her career was also celebrated in the 2016 documentary Tempest Storm. She passed away in 2021 at the age of 93, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy. Remembered as the Queen of Burlesque, she helped shape the art form and inspired later performers, including Dita Von Teese. ❤️
