He Sold His Belongings and Travelled Across Brazil for Love, Only to Discover His Dream Woman Was AI

A 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer named Edimar Rocha Martins made an extraordinary sacrifice after believing he had found the woman he wanted to spend his future with. He sold his belongings and travelled more than 2,000 kilometres to meet Jéssica Oliveira, an online personality who appeared to live on a beautiful farm and promised love, companionship and financial security. With hundreds of thousands of followers, her account looked convincing enough to make Martins believe he had found a genuine opportunity for a new life.

But when Martins arrived in Belo Horizonte on October 11, he faced a heartbreaking discovery. The woman he had travelled so far to meet was not real as she appeared online. Known as Jessica Fazendeira, the character had been created using artificial intelligence to attract followers, generate engagement and promote products. The account’s administrator later acknowledged that Jéssica was AI-generated, although they denied personally inviting Martins to make the journey.

The consequences for Martins were very real. He had sold his possessions, spent time travelling across Brazil and arrived in an unfamiliar city expecting to meet someone special. After discovering the truth, he needed help with food, basic facilities and transportation back home. He eventually returned to Imperatriz, in Maranhão. The incident highlights how convincing AI-generated videos and fictional online personalities have become, especially when they use emotional stories and promises of a better life to attract attention.

Despite the disappointment, Martins has reportedly not given up on finding genuine love and hopes to return to Belo Horizonte one day. His experience is also a reminder to verify someone’s identity before making major life decisions. A beautiful profile, thousands of followers and promises of financial freedom do not prove that someone is who they claim to be. What do you think about this story? Should AI-generated personalities always be clearly identified, especially when they present themselves as potential romantic partners? 💔
