An elderly cat named Spunky was incredibly lucky to survive after falling into the ocean in Deep Cove, British Columbia. At 20 years old, and both blind and deaf, the frightened cat was struggling in the water when a group of high-school students nearby noticed something moving offshore. One of the party guests, James Winkelman, happened to be an experienced lifeguard.
James’ girlfriend, Nicole Phillpotts, first spotted Spunky in the water but thought he was a distressed duck. When James went to investigate, he immediately recognized that someone needed help. Without hesitation, he took off his shoes and socks, climbed down the rocky embankment, and entered the water. He managed to grab the struggling cat by the scruff of his neck and pull him to safety.
The group quickly brought Spunky back to the house and tried to help him recover. A nurse who was among the guests checked the cat and realized he was breathing, but only faintly. After some chest compressions, they rushed him to a nearby animal rescue centre. Their quick response gave the elderly feline a chance to survive what could have been a tragic accident.
James and Nicole later managed to find Spunky’s family and discovered that they had loved him since he was a kitten. His grateful owners were overjoyed to have their beloved pet back, and even sent Nicole flowers to thank her. James said he felt especially happy knowing the cat was blind and deaf, adding that he understood how heartbreaking it would be to lose a beloved pet. Thanks to these kind-hearted young people, Spunky got another chance to go home! ❤️
