Hornet Safety: What You Should Know to Avoid Stings and Stay Protected

Hornets may look frightening, but they play an important role in nature by helping control other insect populations. They usually don’t attack people without a reason, but getting too close to their nest can be dangerous. Hornets are especially protective of their colonies and may become aggressive if they believe their home is under threat. Even loud vibrations from lawnmowers, heavy footsteps, or garden equipment near a hidden nest can disturb them.

Another important detail is that hornets can release alarm pheromones when threatened or crushed. These chemical signals can alert nearby hornets and trigger a defensive response. If one flies close to you, avoid swatting or making sudden movements. Instead, stay calm and slowly move away. Keep sugary drinks, ripe fruit, meat, and picnic food covered, and be careful around bushes, tree stumps, tall grass, and other places where nests may be hidden.

If you are stung, expect some immediate pain, redness, itching, and swelling around the affected area. Unlike honeybees, hornets usually don’t leave their stingers behind, so they can sting more than once. Wash the area with soap and water, then apply a cold pack wrapped in a towel for 10–20 minutes at a time. Calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream may help with itching, while an over-the-counter antihistamine can help relieve some allergic symptoms. Avoid scratching the area, as this can irritate the skin further.

However, some reactions require immediate medical attention. Difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue or throat, dizziness, fainting, or widespread hives can indicate a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Call emergency services immediately if these symptoms appear. If you have a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector, use it as directed without delaying emergency care. Never try to remove a hornet nest yourself, especially if it is large or located near your home. Understanding their behavior and keeping a safe distance can help prevent a painful encounter. 🐝
