Dealing with an adult child who demands a brand-new car can be emotionally difficult, especially when he threatens to move in with his father if you refuse. However, at 21 years old, he is legally an adult, and buying an expensive vehicle is a luxury, not something he is automatically entitled to. Loving your child doesn’t mean giving in to every demand.
1. Don’t Give In to the Ultimatum. Calmly explain that you love him, but you won’t make a major financial decision because of threats or pressure. Giving in may teach him that ultimatums are an effective way to get what he wants. 2. Let Him Make His Own Choice. If he genuinely prefers living with his father, allow him to make that decision. Avoid turning it into a punishment or an angry argument. Instead, wish him well and, if possible, speak calmly with his father so everyone understands the expectations.
3. Encourage Financial Independence. Transportation is ultimately his responsibility as an adult. Rather than purchasing an entire vehicle, you could help him research affordable used cars, offer to match a realistic amount of money he saves, or help him create a savings plan. This allows you to support him without taking on the full financial burden.
The most important thing is to maintain your boundaries while keeping the relationship loving. You can support your son, listen to his concerns, and help him become independent without agreeing to unreasonable demands. Sometimes, allowing adult children to experience the consequences of their choices is one of the most valuable lessons a parent can offer.
