On August 26, 2025, during a White House Cabinet meeting, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to pursue the death penalty for individuals convicted of murder in Washington, D.C., as part of his anti-crime agenda. He stated, “If somebody kills somebody in the capital, Washington, D.C., we’re going to be seeking the death penalty,” describing it as “a very strong preventative” and noting that “everybody that’s heard it agrees with it,” while acknowledging potential controversy by adding, “I don’t know if we’re ready for it in this country, but we have no choice.”
