California man buys an apartment on a cruise ship because its cheaper than renting one on land

Living on a cruise ship sounds like something reserved for the ultra-wealthy, but for one California man, it’s becoming a real-life plan. Instead of spending years tied to expensive rent in Southern California, Austin Wells from San Diego decided to explore an unusual alternative—buying an apartment on a future residential cruise ship. His goal is simple: live more affordably while traveling the world at the same time, without constantly packing and unpacking his life.

Wells purchased a unit on the Storylines MV Narrative, a residential cruise ship currently being built in Croatia. The ship promises a lifestyle where your home, gym, medical care, entertainment, and even social life move with you across the world. Although delays have pushed its launch to around 2027, Wells is still committed to the idea, describing it as a way to keep his routine while experiencing new destinations. He also works remotely, making this lifestyle even more practical.

Financially, the concept is surprisingly competitive. His 12-year lease cost around $300,000, which breaks down to roughly $2,100 per month, plus about $2,100 in service fees covering food, drinks, healthcare, fitness, laundry, and entertainment. In total, it could cost around $4,200 per month—less than many rentals in major U.S. cities like San Diego, especially when transportation and groceries are included.

Wells isn’t alone in this trend. Other residents, including retirees and remote workers, are also choosing life at sea. Some even move between cruise ships full-time for under $100 per night. While still uncommon, these stories show how creative thinking can completely redefine what “home” can look like in the modern world.
