Donald Trump Claims Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Was Vandalized Amid Renovation Failure

Like most people think, major renovation projects on national landmarks are meant to restore pride and appearance, but President Donald Trump has claimed that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has instead suffered damage following a multi-million-dollar renovation, calling it an act of vandalism.

In a Truth Social post on Friday, June 19, 2026, Trump said his administration had “cleaned, renovated, and beautified over 45 Monuments and Memorials, 28 Statues, and 22 Fountains” in Washington, D.C. He added that crime in the capital had improved under his leadership. However, he then shifted attention to what he described as “real problems with Vandalism” at the reflecting pool, which sits between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. He claimed both the surrounding grass and the newly installed interior surface had been deliberately damaged shortly after renovation.

The project itself was reported to have cost around $15 million and was completed ahead of the United States’ 250th birthday celebrations. Soon after completion, however, issues began to appear. Reports described the pool as “rejecting” its makeover, with the bottom coating peeling and breaking into visible “chunks of coating,” along with patches of “American flag blue” spreading across the surface. These problems came after earlier attempts to remove algae had already turned the water from clear blue to a murky green, raising concerns about the quality of the restoration work.

Trump also alleged that chemicals were used to damage the surface and suggested that law enforcement was investigating. He further made claims about a journalist interfering with the pool, though no evidence was provided. Meanwhile, some observers described the situation as a maintenance or construction failure rather than deliberate vandalism, with one witness calling the renovation “a complete failure.”
