While filming a casual visit to MacKenzie Falls in Grampians National Park, Victoria, a young woman had no idea she had just recorded something tragic. She was simply enjoying the scenery with her GoPro on January 20, 2018, capturing the waterfall and the people around her. At first, nothing seemed unusual, and she didn’t realize the seriousness of what was unfolding nearby.

It was only after she left the water and reviewed what she had recorded that she understood the full situation. Her footage had unintentionally captured a 28-year-old Taiwanese man slipping from a rock ledge into the deep water below the falls. In the background of the video, his friends can be seen desperately trying to help him, using a log to reach him while panic sets in.

The situation quickly turned into a failed rescue attempt. An off-duty lifeguard also entered the water, but the conditions were too deep and powerful for anyone to safely locate or reach the man. Emergency services were later called, but due to the remote location and lack of mobile signal, help was delayed. The man’s body was recovered the following morning.

The incident also highlighted several challenges at the site. There was a language barrier between those present, making communication difficult during the emergency. The filmer had to run a considerable distance to find mobile reception in order to call for help. Authorities later reminded the public that swimming at MacKenzie Falls is strictly prohibited due to its dangerous depths and strong underwater currents.
