At 102 years old, Sarah Simpkins made history by achieving a dream she had carried for decades—earning her college degree from Brightpoint Community College in Virginia. She graduated from the Early Childhood Education program alongside her granddaughter, Halimah Shepherd-Crawford, making the milestone even more meaningful for their family.

Simpkins had first attended Allen University in South Carolina when she was young, but her education was interrupted after she became pregnant at age 20. She chose to focus on raising her family instead, eventually becoming the mother of 12 children. Yet despite the responsibilities of motherhood and the passing of many decades, she never abandoned her dream of completing her education.

Standing beside her grandmother at graduation, Halimah said she was overwhelmed with excitement and pride. What had once seemed like only an idea had finally become reality. For Simpkins, the achievement represented far more than receiving a diploma—it was the completion of something she had wanted to accomplish for most of her life.

“I feel very wild,” Simpkins said, expressing her gratitude for being able to reach the milestone. Her story is a powerful reminder that age does not have to define when a dream ends. After raising 12 children and waiting more than 80 years to finish what she started, Sarah Simpkins walked across the stage at 102 and proved that sometimes the right time to chase a dream is simply whenever you are ready.
