Math problem leaves the internet scratching their heads

A simple-looking math puzzle has sparked a huge debate online, with people divided over the correct answer. The challenge appears easy at first, but the hidden pattern behind the numbers has left many people searching for the rule that connects each equation.

The puzzle goes like this:

1 + 4 = 5
2 + 5 = 12
3 + 6 = 21
5 + 8 = ?

Many people assume there is more than simple addition involved. One popular solution follows the pattern A + A(B) = C, which means the first number is added to itself multiplied by the second number. Using this method, 5 + 8 becomes 5 + (5×8), giving the answer 45.

However, another approach uses the previous answer to create a sequence. Starting with 1 + 4 = 5, the next equation becomes 2 + 5 + 5 = 12, then 3 + 6 + 12 = 21, leading to 5 + 8 + 21 = 34. Other people have discovered different patterns that produce answers like 32 or even 1101.

The reason this puzzle has become so popular is that there is no single rule provided, meaning several answers can be argued depending on the pattern you choose. It’s less about finding one perfect solution and more about seeing how differently our brains solve the same problem. What answer did you get first?
