What began as a fun summer afternoon ended in heartbreak for one Illinois family after 8-year-old Kinslee Tschida was struck by lightning while playing in her backyard. Family members said the children had been enjoying time on a swing when thunder was heard in the distance, prompting the adults to tell everyone to head inside. As Kinslee climbed off the swing and started toward the house, lightning struck only moments before she could reach safety.

The tragedy unfolded in seconds. According to her grandfather, another child was standing just a few feet away but was not injured. Kinslee’s mother, a registered nurse, immediately began CPR with the help of other family members while emergency responders rushed to the scene. Despite their efforts, Kinslee was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Officials have completed an autopsy, with the final cause of death pending additional testing.
