At 68, Madonna returned to the MTV VMAs stage on September 27, 2026, performing for the first time at the ceremony in 23 years. The Queen of Pop opened the show alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, delivering a high-energy performance that quickly became one of the night’s biggest talking points. Carpenter joined Madonna for “Bring Your Love,” while Charli XCX appeared for their “Danceteria” remix.

Madonna’s age was also a major topic online, with fans expressing amazement that she continues performing on such a large stage. Her 2026 VMAs appearance came during a major year for the singer, whose Confessions II project earned numerous nominations. She entered the ceremony as the leading nominee, with official pre-show materials listing 11 nominations and later coverage reporting 13.

Her history with the VMAs stretches back to the very first ceremony in 1984, when she performed “Like a Virgin” after one of her shoes slipped off during the routine. Madonna later recalled that her manager told her backstage that her career was over because of the incident. Decades later, she returned to the stage that made the moment part of VMA history.

Madonna’s last VMAs performance before 2026 was the famous 2003 opening number with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Her latest return once again brought surprise guests, elaborate staging and plenty of online reaction. With Snoop Dogg hosting the Los Angeles ceremony, Madonna’s comeback gave viewers another memorable chapter in her long relationship with the VMAs.
