Woman with rare skin condition overcomes negativity and finds true love

Thanks to social media, people are constantly exposed to images of so-called “perfect” faces and bodies, which can make the world feel more judgmental than ever. For those who don’t fit society’s narrow beauty standards, this often leads to unfair criticism from strangers online and in everyday life.

Karine de Souza, from Brazil, knows this reality all too well. She lives with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare and incurable condition diagnosed when she was just three years old. It makes her extremely sensitive to UV rays and unable to repair skin damage caused by sunlight, putting her at a high risk of skin cancer.

Because of this, Karine must protect herself constantly, even wearing high-factor sunscreen indoors. Over the years, she has undergone more than 100 surgeries to remove cancerous lesions caused by sun exposure, which has significantly changed her appearance and limited her life outdoors. Despite this, she has faced not only physical pain but also harsh judgment from strangers, both in public and online.

However, her story also became one of love and strength. Karine met her husband, Edmilson, through social media, and he was drawn to her honesty, courage, and life story rather than her appearance. He embraced her completely, including her three children, and showed her what unconditional love could look like. Although the couple later faced cruel online comments, their bond only grew stronger, and their journey inspired thousands who followed their story.
