Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has fired back at Donald Trump after the president publicly compared the two men and their wives. Trump had called El-Sayed a “communist” and “full of shit” during a speech, before later posting a side-by-side photo of himself with Melania Trump and El-Sayed with his wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku, captioned: “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.”

El-Sayed responded with a pointed remark of his own. Speaking to Sky News, he said, “At least I don’t let mine go in the middle of the Oval Office.” The comment was widely interpreted as a reference to the allegations surrounding Trump’s past relationships, turning the personal attack back on the president.

Asked about Trump’s post during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, El-Sayed doubled down. He said Trump was correct that they represent “two different” visions of America—but described his own marriage very differently. “Sarah and I like each other,” he said, contrasting their relationship with what he characterized as the Trump marriage.

El-Sayed then shifted the focus from personal insults to everyday concerns, asking whether Americans can afford gas and groceries and whether parents believe their children will have a better future. He concluded with another jab at Trump and Melania: “I don’t know about the first lady and the president, but, from what I have heard, it’s a bit of a rocky road.” The exchange quickly became one of the more personal moments of the Senate race.
