A family of African wild dogs and 10 vulnerable pups faced a terrifying ordeal near Nkaya Pan, south of Satara in Kruger National Park. Wildlife enthusiast Liza Kruger captured the encounter as two adults moved their litter through cold, wet conditions while keeping a close watch on their surroundings. Two hyenas were reportedly following from a distance, adding even more pressure to the journey.

The adults briefly separated from the pups to investigate the danger, while the young animals moved into the long grass for cover. But the situation soon became far more serious. As the adults continued along the road, three male lions appeared in the area, and one small pup was spotted near a lion. The youngster eventually stood and tried to move away as the predator followed. 😔

The lion ultimately caught the pup and carried it into the grass. Another lion was also believed to have encountered a pup nearby. After the lions moved away, the adult wild dogs returned and began searching frantically through the grass for their young. Two pups were later confirmed to be there, but the fate of the others remained unknown when the sighting ended.

The heartbreaking encounter highlights just how dangerous life can be for African wild dogs raising young. Lions and hyenas are among the predators that can threaten vulnerable pups, especially during risky den relocations.
